5 Minutes up the road from Orford is Triabunna, the gateway to Maria Island. Triabunna is a fishing town, that used to also have a big wood chip mill in the bay. That mill has been sold and the new owners are hoping to re-develop it for tourism. The town is slowly changing to accommodate the ever growing tourism industry. Triabunna has an IGA and a few eateries and coffee shops, as well as a fish & chips kiosk serving freshly caught Tasmanian fish. It’s worth trying!
Triabunna is also the gateway to Maria Island. The ferry leaves from the marina. Timetable and fare information can be obtained from the information centre near the marina or online. Maria Island is a National Park and has basic accommodation in bunk beds and camping facilities. Bookings are essential for accommodation as it is often sold out.
